The Secret to Having Victory Over my Giants

I’m realizing that there are giants that I have to fight. Giants that go by the name of Inadequacy, Fear and Unbelief. I spent quite some time trying to come up with the best war plan, figuring out which stones would best prepare me for battle. But no matter how hard I tried, I quickly realized that my own attempts failed to grant me victory over the Goliath that stood before me. And it was then that I realized:

I am not David. I am Israel.

I am Israel, who calculates my ability against the giant that stands before me and concludes that I am inadequate. I am Israel, who stands on the sideline with hesitation because I am paralyzed by fear. I am Israel, who forgets the victory promised to me because the hurdle that stands before me has led me to unbelief. And it was then that I realized:

I am Israel in need of a David.

I need a David who will come confidently in the name of the Lord to fight the giants on my behalf. I need a David who will go before the King and volunteer himself for battle. I need a David who, though mocked and ridiculed, believed that he had been made for this moment. And it was then that I realized:

I did not just get a David. I got Jesus.

I got Jesus, who came as the only one adequate to live the perfect life so that I wouldn’t need to. I got Jesus, who came to demonstrate perfect love so that all my fears would be casted. I got Jesus, who was willing to be put to death alongside my giants so that I would have freedom to believe for victory all the days of my life.

I may have giants that work against me. But I have Jesus who is for me. It is in this truth that I realize I can claim victory over every battle no matter how big my Goliath seems to be because my Jesus is much bigger.

Like many of you, 2020 has been the year of facing giants and feeling thrown into unexpected and unfair wars. In the middle of a year that feels so big and heavy, I find rest in knowing that true freedom has nothing to do with my ability to fight all that is against me. True freedom is found in the person of Jesus, who has already gone to war against the Enemy, has already claimed victory for His bride, and continues to stand on the frontlines of all my present wars.

This is my hope.

This is the secret to having victory and finding freedom over my giants.

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This is the day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head.” 1 Samuel 17:45-46
