Calling All Young Adult: SALT Conference Is On!

Last year there were many changes and restructuring within the youth ministry of the Hmong District of the C&MA, including the appointment of a youth ministry point-person and two committees to oversee HLUB and SALT. I have the privilege of being appointed lead coordinator for SALT’08. The SALT leadership committee members include: Tou Dalton Vue, youth pastor at St. Paul Hmong Alliance Church, MN; Meng Mua, second-generation church planting pastor, St. Paul Hmong Alliance Church, MN; Pastor Samuel Heu of Illinois; and Pastor La Neng Xiong, Maplewood, MN.

In January of this year, we have an official meeting in Milwaukee, WI. Many things were discussed and brainstormed; there were a few changes as some areas of youth ministry under the Hmong District were restructured, including HLUB and SALT.

Many young people have wondered whether HLUB and SALT will continue, some already assumed that these two conferences have ended with HLUB 2006. I like to bring all of you up to date on what’s happening with SALT at this time. I have some opportunities to visit different youth groups; talking and listening to young adults in the local Hmong Alliance churches, and many faithful young adult Christians have shared their thoughts with me on youth ministry and the two Hmong District’s youth conferences, HLUB and SALT.

Will there be SALT?
Yes. There will be a SALT conference in the summer of 2008. My hope and prayer is that SALT will continue to be a conference of Christ-relevant event for all young adult Hmong from around the country.

What are some changes for SALT?
First, SALT conference is for all those who will enter their first year of college and older, single young adult. Second, SALT will be five days long, similar to that of HLUB. These are a few changes, but they are major changes.

Why the changes?
The leadership team is hoping for a more age-relevant conference, and more time for interpersonal fellowship with Jesus Christ. The leadership team hopes to contextualize SALT’s programs toward the young adult age group. Our desire is to see lives truly changed from the “inside out,” challenge Christian living, and build future Christian leadership now. For young adult deserve no less. I truly hope that by changing and restructuring SALT, we will ignite a new generation of believers for Jesus Christ.

What about the purpose of SALT?
The purpose of SALT is the same. To hold a conference that will bring young adult men and women to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, nurture and strengthen their lives as Single Adult Living Triumphantly, and to build and equip them to use their gifts to serve our Lord Jesus Christ wherever they may be. This is the essence of SALT.

What will we see at SALT’08?
Planning biblical programs on spiritual issues that are relevant, challenging, and practical to the single adult, such as seminars that are faith-applicable, open forums, ministry networking, more interpersonal fellowship, promoting leadership training that is practical in local church setting and in mission. These are some objectives that we would like to see at SALT. Can we fulfill all these thoughts? Well, the desire is to be obedient in serving the post-high school age group and making SALT, not necessary the biggest or the best, but a relevant Christian conference for the young single adult.

What’s between now and the summer of 2008?
There are a lot of meeting and communications back and forth between now and the summer of 2008. Most facets of the planning stage are under way at this time. But most importantly, prepare yourself and pray that many young single adult would attend SALT’08.

When and where is SALT 2008, and how much will it cost?
A suitable place, yet at the same time, flexible enough for the size of our group (anywhere between 400 – 1000), and keep the cost to a minimum for a weeklong conference is not easily available. However, Maranatha Bible Camp and Conference Ground in Maxwell (North Platte), NE will be the site for SALT’08. The date is August 4 – 8, 2008. The cost per person is around $300.

Who can we contact concerning SALT?
You can share your thoughts with me at the email below, or share any concerns with one of the leadership team members. Again, more information will come out to all local church groups when they are completed and ready or posted on the District’s website, www.hmongdistrict.org. For now, all questions and comments can be forward to pastor Sing B U Ly at: salt_08@yahoo.com. Please remember the SALT committee team in your prayers. Do pray for obedience and faithfulness in planning and organizing SALT’08. We are here to serve you and glorify our Lord Jesus Christ together.
